Dragon Phoenix Wine Consulting was co-founded by Fongyee Walker MW and Edward Ragg in Beijing in 2007.

Specialists in wine education and professional tasting since 1999, Fongyee and Edward share over thirty years of experience in higher education having taught at Cambridge and Tsinghua Universities.

Since 2007 Dragon Phoenix has pioneered wine education across China through our own programmes as well as those of the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET). Since 2014 Dragon Phoenix has also offered the WSET’s flagship qualification the WSET Level 4 Diploma and remains the only provider of the fully taught Diploma in mainland China.

In 2016 Dragon Phoenix won the prestigious Riedel Trophy for WSET Educator of the Year, having been the first company in mainland China to be previously nominated for the award in 2013.

Dragon Phoenix also provides fully independent wine consultancy services for the China market(s) working with the China trade as well as private consumers, corporate groups, international wine companies, individual wineries, wine trade bodies and clients requiring detailed market research.

Dragon Phoenix is directed by Fongyee Walker MW who is joined by a team of dedicated, wine-passionate staff.


Fongyee Walker MW

Co-Founder, MD & Chief Educatorfongyee

Fongyee is mainland China’s most qualified wine educator having passed her Master of Wine (MW) examinations on top of years of experience as a teacher in a variety of areas. She is a leading WSET Certified Educator and Assessor teaching all over China; and is the only other wine educator in mainland China (along with Edward Ragg) currently permitted to teach the WSET’s flagship qualification, the Level 4 Diploma in Wines & Spirits.

Fongyee is a Mandarin Chinese-English education specialist, the only person in Asia permitted to teach Germany’s VDP Association courses and works with a wide range of other trade bodies and individual wineries. She is a consultant to Air New Zealand, co-chair of Shanghai’s Wine 100 competition and selects the wines for mainland China’s first subscription wine club service SigWine.

A popular wine presenter, who played a significant part in the wine documentary film Red Obsession (2013), she judges for leading Chinese magazines and also serves as an international judge – with past and recent appearances at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show, the Wines of Chile Awards, the Hawke’s Bay Wine Awards, the Qantas Wine Show of Western Australia and the Limestone Coast Wine Show. Fongyee writes for several Chinese and international wine publications and is co-author with Edward Ragg of The Cambridge University Guide to Blind Wine Tasting (2004, rev. 2006, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2017).



Edward Ragg (DipWSET)


Edward is a published poet, literary critic and wine writer and educator. With Fongyee Walker, he is the only other Tutor of the WSET Level 4 Diploma in mainland China. A Certified WSET Educator/Assessor he also holds SWE and Court of Master Sommeliers qualifications and has passed the Master of Wine Theory exams. He is now focusing on MW tasting preparation.

Edward was the first foreigner to be appointed an Associate Professor in the Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures (est. 1926) at Tsinghua University where he previously taught literature in English and established the university’s first wine course and the Tsinghua University Wine Association (est. 2012). In 2017 he left Tsinghua to pursue his writing and career in wine.

Edward has written for The World of Fine Wine Magazine, Decanter Magazine, Tong Magazine, La Revue du Vin de France (China), The Drinks Business, Harpers Wine and Spirit, Meininger’s Wine Business International and Spirito diVino Asia, among other titles. He is co-author, with Fongyee, of The Cambridge University Guide to Blind Wine Tasting (2004, rev. 2006, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2017). Edward has also judged for leading Chinese magazines, at Chinese wine challenges (e.g. Wine 100), was guest international judge at the 2012 McLaren Vale Wine Show and has also judged at the Perth Royal Wine Show.

Joanna Qiao

Wine Class Co-ordinator

Joanna majored in vinification and is fascinated by all aspects of the wine industry from production to marketing to education. She is also a WSET Level 3 Award in Wines & Spirits holder and New Zealand Wine Level 2 certificate holder.

Joanna is Dragon Phoenix’s Wine Class Co-ordinator handling all general inquiries and administration concerning our wine class programmes: from WSET to DP’s own wine classes. She works alongside Ding Li, DP’s WSET Level 4 Co-ordinator.

Joanna was formerly responsible for the organization of Dragon Phoenix’s wine events as well as those organized by Dragon Phoenix on behalf of wine trade bodies such as the Hawke’s Bay Winegrowers Association.

Li Ding

WSET Level 4 Co-ordinator

Ding Li has over fifteen years of rich experience working as a Chinese teacher and advisor of foreign nationals working and studying in China.

She brings a strong communicational and organizational skill set to Dragon Phoenix having previously worked with a wide range of people from different cultural backgrounds.

Ding Li provides vital support for Dragon Phoenix’s WSET Level 4 Diploma programmes, both the taught and online courses. She also brings valuable translation and text-editing skills to Dragon Phoenix.

David Xing (DipWSET)

Wine Educator

David got his Bachelor of Philosophy at Renmin University of China and his M.Sc. in ‘Management Financier et Organisation’ at the KEDGE Business School in France. His graduation thesis was entitled ‘Valeur d’investissement du vin et des portefeuilles avec le vin comme un atout’.

A WSET Certified Educator (Levels 1-2), David has first-hand experience of the most famous wine regions of Europe and is familiar with both European wine markets and the mainland Chinese imported wine market. He passed his WSET Level 4 Diploma in 2016 and now also teaches WSET Level 3.

With great enthusiasm for teaching, David possesses excellent verbal skills and a friendly command of the classroom. His study of philosophy and wine has assisted him in honing his written and interpretative skills, both of which contribute significantly to his wine writing and independent reviewing. He is also studying for the Master of Wine now.

Chang Liu (DipWSET)

Wine Educator

Chang holds a Double Master’s Degree in Oenology and Wine Business from the University of Adelaide, Australia. He is also a WSET Certified Educator (Levels 1-2) and a WSET Diploma Certificate holder. Chang has valuable prior experience working in Australian wineries as well as wine exports, which has given him a thorough understanding of winemaking techniques and also the dynamics of Australia’s wine market. He now also teaches WSET Level 3.

On returning to China, Chang has embraced global wine education and aims to assist Dragon Phoenix in providing top quality classes to Chinese wine lovers and the wine trade.

Sun Ying

Wine Educator

is a Certified WSET Educator for WSET Levels 1-2. She obtained her WSET Level 2 Award from the Ecole du Vin à Paris and completed her WSET Level 3 Award in China with Dragon Phoenix.  Sun Ying has been teaching English, French Language and Culture, and Cross-Cultural Communication at Chongqing University since 1998.

She was appointed as a Lecturer in Chinese for the INALCO (Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales, est. 1669) in Paris from 2009 to 2011. Currently studying for her WSET Level 4 Diploma, she draws on her tertiary education experience to bring to Dragon Phoenix a new teaching voice in Chongqing as she furthers her own studies in wine.

Tang Zhu

Wine Educator

Tang Zhu obtained her WSET Level 3 Award with Dragon Phoenix and is now studying for her WSET Level 4 Diploma. Tang Zhu has over 16 years of education and management experience, formerly in nationalized enterprises in China, during which time she gained strong event organizing capabilities.

Now Tang Zhu is delighted to be working as a wine educator for Dragon Phoenix. She is in charge of promotion, wine education and student recruiting work in Chengdu.

Yonan Xuyonan1

Wine Educator

Yonan is a WSET Level 3 Award holder and is currently studying for her WSET Level 4 Diploma with Dragon Phoenix. Yonan teaches multi-lingually in Mandarin, English and Cantonese due to her overseas study experience, including significant time spent in the UK. She has an interest in charity work and is active in the Wine /Art & Design fields.

As a WSET Certified Educator (Levels 1-2), a New Zealand Wine Professional Level 2 holder and Certified Ambassador for the Academy of Wines of Portugal, Yonan is Dragon Phoenix’s Shanghai-based wine educator where she runs a range of courses and helps promote wine culture and education in that city.

Linda Zhanglinda

Wine Educator

Linda has a double Bachelor’s of Arts in Business Administration and Law from Jilin University. She has over five years experience of international trade, management and global purchasing in the wine industry.

Linda completed her WSET Level 3 with Dragon Phoenix and is currently studying for WSET Level 4 Diploma, also with Dragon Phoenix. Linda is responsible for education, education marketing and promotion for Dragon Phoenix in Shenyang.

Lin Wangwang-lin

Wine Educator

Lin Wang holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law from Dongbei University of Finance and Economics and also a Master’s degree in Wine & Spirits Marketing and Management from Bordeaux INSEEC Business School. In 2008 Lin Wang went to France specifically to study wine, French language and culture and obtained her WSET Level 3 Award at the WSET Education Center in Macon in 2012.

During her time in Burgundy she had an internship at Olivier Leflaive in Puligny-Montrachet working in the vineyards and cellar. She also worked in Burgundian wine tourism and exports, as a French language translator and as an assistant to customers at the annual Hospices de Beaune auction.

In 2013 Lin Wang returned to China and continues to work in wine, wine education and cultural promotion. She is currently studying for her WSET Diploma with Dragon Phoenix as well as working as a wine educator for Dragon Phoenix in Dalian.

Wilson Zhaowilson

Wine Educator

Wilson holds a Bachelor degree in Business Administration from Baylor University, Texas. He has over 5 years experience in trading, marketing and the sale of wine in mainland China. Wilson completed his WSET Level 3 certificate with Dragon Phoenix and is currently studying for his WSET Level 4 Diploma (also with DP).

A New Zealand Wine Level 2 certificate holder (from NZTE), Wilson also had critical winemaking experience at Ngatarawa Winery, Hawke’s Bay, during the 2014 vintage. He is currently working as a wine educator for Dragon Phoenix in Qingdao and is responsible for promotion, recruitment and delivery of courses there.




Peng Wu

PA to Fongyee Walker & Office Assistant

Peng holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Beijing University of International Business and Economics and a Master’s degree in Wine Business from ESC Dijon.

Since graduating from France, Peng has worked for Dragon Phoenix and also completed her WSET Level 3 with DP.

She is currently responsible for the day-to-day running of the Dragon Phoenix office and is studying for her WSET Level 4 with Dragon Phoenix.

Yingying Zhang

Office & Accounts Manager

Yingying has over ten years of MNC experience in office management and administration. She is an experienced accounting professional with a solid financial background and proven analytical skills; and is now cultivating an interest in wine. She has excellent organizational capabilities and oversees the day-to-day running of the Dragon Phoenix office.

Tiffany Hu

Education Coordinator

Tiffany completed her Master’s degree in Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics at Xi’an International Studies University and joined the DP team due to her keen interest in wine knowledge, education and the wine industry. Tiffany handles all class inquiries and registration for Dragon Phoenix’s foundation, intermediate and advanced courses (across seven cities in China), as well DP’s popular Wine Wednesday series and other master classes. She is now studying for the WSET Level 3 Award in Wine.

Tchintchin Lv

European Wine Tour Liaison

Qingqing was formerly Dragon Phoenix’s Wine Class Co-ordinator but is now based in Paris, France, where she continues to support Dragon Phoenix with its wine tours (following the first DP Wine Tour of Northern Rhone, Beaujolais and the Cote d’Or in July-Aug 2016).

A French speaker who honed her linguistic skills during her studies abroad, Qingqing holds a professional Bachelor’s Diploma in Wine Marketing and the Wine Trade and the qualification of Wine Sommelier and Caviste Level 4 (both from the Université du Vin of Suze la Rousse).

She is also a WSET Level 3 Award in Wines and Spirits holder. Qingqing has previous experience in winery work, wine sales and marketing and has worked as a sommelier in high-end on-trade establishments in France.


Gus Zhu (DipWSET)


Wine Educator

is a Certified WSET Educator for WSET Levels 1-3. He is a  WSET Level 3 Assessor and WSET Level 4 Diploma certificate holder.  Gus’s teaching is also recognized by a number of trade bodies: he is an authorized A+ Australian Wine Specialist (approved by Wine Australia) and Ambassador of Napa Valley wine education (authorized by the Napa Valley Wine Educators Academy).

Gus has provided staff training (e.g. for the Park Hyatt, Beijing) and seminars (for the Tsinghua University Wine Association) as well as oral translation (English-Chinese) at wine seminars organized by Dragon Phoenix: e.g. the Napa Tasting Seminar at the Napa Valley Vintners Fair; and the Pinot Noir Tasting Seminar at the New Zealand Winegrowers Beijing Wine Fair.

Gus also has judging experience as an Associate Judge: e.g. at Wine In China Magazine’s Top 100 Wines Competition. He recently completed a Master’s in Oenology at UC Davis, but continues to support Dragon Phoenix with consulting and translation projects. He is also studying for the Master of Wine and has passed his Stage 1 Assessment.
